The Travel Team is pleased to confirm the Cycle2work scheme will be available again from 13th March 2017.

The Cycle2work scheme enables University employees to make savings of up to 42%* on a brand new bike and safety accessories for cycling to work by purchasing the bike tax-free.

In addition, Manchester Met has agreed a further 5% discount on the cost of bicycles purchased from any Halfords store or online shop, and a wide selection of independent retailers. Colleagues will also benefit from a 20% discount on cycle accessories for the life of the hire agreement.

How it works at Manchester Met

Colleagues can sign-up for the scheme from 13th March 2017 – 23rdApril 2017.

The Cycle2work scheme will allow colleagues to purchase bicycles and accessories to the value of £1,000, where the cost of the bike is recovered out of your gross salary.

Bicycles can be purchased directly from Halfords or from a wide selection of independent cycle retailers across Manchester and Cheshire. There is also a Cycle Republic Store located on London Road in Manchester City Centre where Letters of Collection can be redeemed.

How do I sign up?

Halfords administer the Cycle2work application process and details can be accessed by contacting Halfords directly.

Update on the first UK city wide coffee cup recycling trail

Over the last few months the Waste and Recycling team have been supporting ‘The first UK City wide coffee cup recycling trial’. Working in collaboration with a number of coffee shops, Manchester City Council and Hubbub to achieve a city recycling target of 20,000 coffee cups. Manchester Met have been provided with a number brightly coloured bins, which have been located in a few main areas of the Manchester campus for all staff and students to take up the city challenge.

Amanda Reid – The waste and recycling manager – Says ‘Manchester Met have recycled over 10,727 cups since the project began in November, with up to 100% contamination free collections in some bins. It is great that staff and students are so keen to use the cup recycling bins and importantly that the university can actively contribute to diverting waste from landfill and seeking alternative treatment such as recycling, keeping the value in the resources we have’

The trial has now finished and the Waste and Recycling Team are working with Facilities to assess the current service provision and infrastructure requirements needed to continue with the project. This will involve assessment of collection cost, environmental impact, available local treatment routes and practical serviceability on site.

Update on the first UK city wide coffee cup recycling trail

OUR VISION TO BECOME THE MOST SUSTAINABLE UNIVERSITY IN THE WORLD

Our vision to become one of the most sustainable universities in the world. In 2016, Manchester Metropolitan became the first UK University to achieve the new ISO14001:2015 accreditation for environmental management, retained our top three position in the People and Planet University League for our environmental and ethical performance, and were awarded ‘Go Ultra Low Company’ status for our implementation of electric vehicles. These are just some of the highlights from 2015-16, which are outlined in Manchester Met’s recent Environmental Sustainability Statement.

Back in 2014, the development of a new Environmental Sustainability Strategy 2014-2020 helped us identify our important environmental and social impacts, and importantly, what we could do limit our impacts, protect the environment, ensure we are able to mitigate against and adapt to climate change, and to positively contribute towards sustainable development at the university and beyond.

We have recently published our annual Environmental Sustainability Statement for 2015-16,which outlines the steps we have taken to progress towards the ambitious targets set in the University’s Environmental Sustainability Strategy. Here are some of the key highlights:

  • 23.5% reduction in carbon emissions since 2005-6 baseline year.
    Our energy consumption influences significantly our carbon emissions reduction, and so using energy efficiently, and consuming low carbon and renewable energy is essential.
  • 46.3% of our waste is now reused and recycled.
    This means that we are well on our way to achieving our 60% target by 2020 thanks to students and staff recycling on campus.
  • 60.6% of students say they are gaining the skills and knowledge to understand key global sustainability issues.
    Whilst at studying at university, our students can access and engage in activities, projects and research to understand sustainable development.
  • 48.0% of the university’s core fleet vehicles are electric or low-carbon emissions.
    Awarded the ‘Go Ultra Low Company’ status in 2016, we are working to introduce more low emission and electric vehicles to meet our 75% target by 2020.
  • First UK University to achieve the ISO14001:2015 certification.
    An Environmental Management System which provides a framework to manage our impacts and continuously improve our environmental performance.
  • Top 3 University for environmental and ethical performance.
    Placed in the top three performing universities in the People and Planet Green League for four consecutive years.
  • Level 3 Flexible Framework achieved.
    This allows organisations to measure and monitor progress on sustainable procurement, we have met level three out of five.
  • 86.0% of students and 75.8% of staff think that Manchester Metropolitan is an environmentally sustainable university.

Working together to support Fairtrade

Last week staff and students from across the university came together to show support for farmers during Fairtrade Fortnight. The theme this year was exploitation and we asked you to consider this while adding Fairtrade to our break!

There were a whole host of events over the fortnight organised by colleagues in the Environment Team, Marketing, Library, Catering and The Union. Fairtrade Breaks for all staff and students were held in Manchester and Cheshire offering free Fairtrade hot beverages and snacks while asking you to consider those who grow our produce.

In Cheshire a free film screening of Blood Diamond, which highlights a number of the issues linked to the theme of exploitation in supply chains was popular. On campus there was also Football and Netball matches with Fairtrade cotton t-shirts and balls stitched in Pakistan provide by Bala Sports. Winning teams received a Fairtrade Hampers provide by Peros our tea and coffee supplier.

Colleagues from the library in Crewe organised their annual competitions and book display for the fortnight. Over 100 students participated in their Fairtrade mugshot and t-shirt design competition with winners receiving Fairtrade goodies from their local Co-operative Food.

Our regular clothing and book exchange Pop Swap was held during the fortnight in the Holden Gallery with the aim to highlight exploitation in supply chains in the fashion industry. Over 40 participants got involved to swap pre-loved items for someone else’s.

Staff & students also got involved in a photo competition sharing images of their Fairtrade break and showing support for farmers across the globe, winners of the Fairtrade Hampers and entries can be found here.

We are still looking for contributions to our exhibition on the theme of exploitation and modern slavery, which will be held in the Link Gallery from the 2nd until 5th May. We are looking for existing or new work from staff and students more information here.
